Is there an Order ? [04 Oct 2008|11:36am]

Is there a particular order that the Jerry Cornelius books should be read in ???? I picked up "The final program" and started reading it .

I am a huge fan of the "Nomad of Time" series and really just got into the Cornelius books because Una Presson was in "The Adventures of Una Persson and Catherine Cornelius in the Twentieth Century".

Humor [30 Oct 2007|04:19pm]

Arioch's sandwiches: kins-layer - womans-layer, kins-layer - womans-layer...
Admiral Magnum Colt.
— Beware. I must fulfil my destiny.
— Your destiny?
— It is no destiny at all, but an awful thing called doom.
— Oh, «Doom», «Quake», «Morrowind»... Why do you say me it?..
Elric remembered his father's last words. They in turn made him recollect an old herbal which had spoken of the distillation of dragon-excrement; how it brought courage to the weak and skill to the strong, how a man might fight for five days and nights and feel no pain. And he remembered how the herbal had said to collect the excrement, so before he clambered back upon the dragon he had reached up his helm and caught in hissing steel a small drop of excrement which would cool and harden, he knew, into a pastel, a crumb or two of which might be taken cautiously with considerable liquid.
Gamer the Damned.
Prince Gay...
He forced his lips to frame strange syllables, to utter the old vowel heavy words of the High Speech of Old Melnibone, a speech hardly suited to a human tongue at all.
— said Elric.
Your Whiskers has bought «Whiskas»!
Thirteen times thirteen, the steps to the sad giants lair:
And the Chaos Shit lies there.
Elric hauled his sword from its scabbard and cried the age old ululating warshout of Melnibone. Stormbringer's eerie voice joined with his, giving vent to a song:
— Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away...
And, when the note faded from triumph to a dying echo, a huge outline began to form in the sky above the earth, as if summoned by the horn.
It was the inscription: «Format C complete».
Jacky Chan: new incarnation of Eternal Champion.
Moorgloom Mooncock.
— May I seat on you, Mr. Begg?

Michael Kane [04 Sep 2007|06:49pm]

[ mood | confused ]

I'm rereading 'City of the Beast' for the nth time and I'm sad to say that it doesn't grip me as much as it did when I was younger - much much younger. It was the first sci-fi book I've ever read, it was also the first 'adult' book I've ever read, so... it made a really great impact on me, even though I read it like a fairy tale. Today, as wonderful as the story still is... I find myself somewhat disillusioned with Michael Kane as a character - he's too... heroic. Considering Moorcock's later ventures and later characters, Kane just seems so powerful, so smart, so skilled - so everything. It smells of hero and it's not what I've come to love about MM's characters. Look at Elric, Glogauer (just reread Breakfast in the Ruins too, loved it again), Cornelius... they're all so flawed. So... despicable, sometimes. So... anti-hero.

What are your thoughts on Kane? Do you like him? I mean, I like him as a person, he'd be the kinda guy you'd fall for and not regret... but yeah. He is too heroic. Or I need sleep.

Elric Movie Talk [27 Feb 2007|01:11am]

In a thread on Multiverse.org, Moorcock has been posting, responding to talk about the movie. He said that they are talking about the movie, 300, as an example of the style and color for the movie. This makes me very happy to hear as I think Elric should have something otherworldly-looking about it.

Also, a quote from the producer was posted that gives me more hope of this being done right: "I heard about a fantastic and life-changing British fantasy series of books. I was absolutely stunned by the imagination, daring and intelligence of the books. To me it is one of the great works of imagination in the twentieth century. I grew up on Tolkien but this, to be honest, leaves him in the dust as far as ambition and philosophical depth. At least, that is how I feel, and that is how anyone attempting to film a book should feel - utter commitment."

Reading this, relieved me a great deal. When they originally optioned the series after the big hit of the LotR movie, I feared that the producers would be thinking that Elric should be made in the same style as the LotR movies and that they didn't see how different a series it was. I loved the LotR movies (much more than the books), but if they did Elric in the same style it would be a travesty. LotR is a completely escapist fantasy, so long shots of beautiful forests, mountains and valleys makes sense. Hell, that is the way the books are written. "Look how beautiful this world is! Look how nice the hobbits are! Look how noble Aragorn is! Don't you want to live in Middle Earth in a pretty Elven house? Of course you do!" Right from the beginning of Fellowship, I wanted to climb in the screen and visit the shire. I don't think anyone reads Elric and says, "what a beautiful place. I want to live there."

Excerpt from "The Knight of the Sword" [05 Sep 2006|11:43pm]

[ mood | curious ]

I was recently reading a paperback copy of "The Knight of the Sword" when I suddenly noticed a particular scene where Corum attempts to pursue Rhialina as she is claimed by the now-deceased Margrave and his crew of the damned. All of a sudden, I was reminded of the recent big-screen blockbuster Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest.

Sheer coincidence or...clever plagiarism? What's the verdict.....

Eternal Champion Collection for Grabs [09 Aug 2006|05:11pm]

This place looks sort of dead and I'm not sure if adverts are allowed here, but any try is a good try . . .

I'm cleaning out my book collection (moving sucks) and my rather large pile of Eternal Champion books are on the chopping block. I know they're pretty hard to find nowadays, so hopefully someone will want to give them a good home! You can find them here: http://cleaning-out.livejournal.com/4732.html.

Hawkmoon fanfic.. [05 Dec 2005|12:10pm]

[ mood | MM fanfic, I rule the internet ]

Just a drabble, about Dorian Hawkmoon.
Rating is PG.

The jewel in his skull weighs him down. The blood of hundreds runs over his hands, and the once mad Duke of Koln smiles. His dreams are haunted, his life is hunted, and he is in love.Collapse )

Wohoo, slash community for MM's fiction! [30 Nov 2005|12:40am]

[ mood | mellow ]

I'm not sure how welcome this will be, but since I already made it...

Champion Slash.

I have no idea if any of you guys are slash fans (well, except for darling yehnica), but I am, and well, this is the internet and there was no place for slashy MM discussion. There is now.

That is all.

P.S. Don't even start on how wrong slash is. I've been writing/reading slash for years and I have learned to laugh at comments like that.

A (different) Elric altogether.... [21 Oct 2005|10:39pm]

[ mood | curious ]

I have wondered if the creator of the anime/manga series Full Metal AlchemistCollapse ) Hiromu Arakawa is a Michael Moorcock fan...

Just a silly question - but who else would name his protagonists after the White Wolf himself?

Life & Times of Jerry Cornelius [08 Oct 2005|11:29am]

Anyone else here read the (Four Walls Eight Windows) reprint of Michael Moorcock's "The Life & Times of Jerry Cornelius"?

What did you think of the new stories included...like the novella Firing the Cathedral & The Spencer Inheritance?

Your opinions are most welcome....

music! [10 Sep 2005|06:30pm]

[ mood | lazy ]

In the wake of yet another round of procrastination, I turn to you guys with a question - are there songs (or, perhaps, instrumental pieces) that remind you of MM's books and/or characters? If yes, what are they?

I just thought we could compile a neat playlist.

As my own contribution, I bring Sting's 'A Thousand Years' (mp3), which makes me think of Eternal Champion in general.

Poll #561734 Favourite incarnation.

Who is your favourite Eternal Champion incarnation?

Jerry Cornelius
Oswald Bastable
Elric of Melniboné
Karl Glogauer
Dorian Hawkmoon
Colonel Pyat
Michael Kane

Feel free to comment about the why - especially in regards to your choice in terms of comparison to the other incarnations. (Personally, my own preference tends to sway depending on my mood. Heh.)

New here with a question [11 Aug 2005|08:04am]

[ mood | confused ]

I don't want this to be a spoiler or anything so I will stay pretty discrete. In the beginning of The White Wolf's Son, Elric is tied to the mast of a ship trying to call out to Stormbringer. I was wondering if there was a book other than The Scrayling Tree or The Dreamthief's Daughter that would explain how he got there and who the man is that is torturing him? This has been bugging me since I finished the book. Thanks for any help you can give me. :)

Quick question [09 Aug 2005|03:40pm]

Has anybody in the community compiled a list of Moorcok's works, with attention paid to works published under different titles in America and Britain? Or if anyone can send me a link to an online source, I'd appreciate it. (I've had no luck in my own searching.) Thanks in advance.

He is probly one of my most favorite fictional characters all time.

I haven't done any fanart yet that I deem even remotly worth posting anywhere on the web yet though.

Hello [15 Jun 2005|01:36am]

Hi, I'm Skull Bearer. I write fanfiction mostly, and I love Micheal Moorcock's 'Elric' series ever since I picked up a paperback copy of 'The Vanishing Tower' in a charity shop.

I also think that Elric really, really didn't deserve the hand that fate deal him.

And so I wrote this:Collapse )
